Lightening – signs that the baby has dropped and the final countdown

I’m finding the term ‘lightening’ ironic right now; nothing feels light whatsoever! But it’s all good because this part is meant to mean that the baby has dropped further down into the pelvis and is getting ready to show up. And don’t I know it…

Because the baby has moved further down there is more space for my stomach again – hooray! (Proof of this is that I ate 7 fish fingers as part of lunch today. And I still had room for dessert). I’m still experiencing killer indigestion (perhaps because of all those fish fingers) but breathing is a lot easier now. The bad news is that the baby is closer to my bladder and peeing has become a top pastime.

In the evenings I’m experiencing a really weird sensation that lasts for a few hours. I can literally feel the baby’s head wriggling around and burrowing further down; it creates a very strange pressure, which makes me think my organs are all going to drop out at once. Consequently, when I walk (I say walk but really I mean shuffle), it feels like I’ve got a bowling ball between my legs and it’s making me prefer to stay at home!

I’m finding these last few days of pregnancy to be very mixed. I’m excited about giving birth and finally meeting my baby but I’m also feeling really scared that it could be only hours or days away. Although it’s now really uncomfortable when the baby kicks and moves, I am going to miss that feeling too. The days feel endlessly long but somehow go by really quickly without me doing anything even remotely useful – although I’ve enjoyed being fairly active throughout my pregnancy I now really can’t walk far and can’t concentrate on anything either. It means that I’m getting serious value for money with my Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts though.
